Over the years, the hot neighborhood for expats to hang out in has shifted from the center of Taichung to the Canal District and now into the neighboring area often called Little Europe. The whole neighborhood, located roughly around Jincheng Road, is filled with specialty shops, clothing stores, international restaurants, cafes and bars.

A few of the streets are closed to traffic on weekends and have a delightful European feel to them. One can roam around the whole area in just a few hours, provided that the friendly locals don’t keep you busy in any of the establishments. “Soho Street” is the place to go after the sun goes down, with several expat owned drinking holes offering friendly company, cheap eats and imported beers.

Taichung MRT – In order to keep pace with Taichung City’s rapid growth, the central government’s Ministry of Transporation and Communications has prioritized plans to develop a Taichung mass rapid transit (MRT) system, known as the Taichung Metro. Current plans for the eventual construction of at least three lines, as noted below, with ground being broken in October, 2009 on the Green Line, scheduled for completion by 2015.

Taichung’s MRT plan, one of the most ambitious in Taiwan, consists of three main lines:

-Green Line (Wuri-Beitun): Already under construction by the Taipei City Department of Rapid Transit Systems, this 16.7-kilometer line has 18 stations and starts from SongZhu Road in Taichung’s northeastern Beitun District, following WenXin and WenXin South roads for most of its length to end along the city’s southwestern edge, at Taichung’s High-Speed Railroad Station in Wuri, on the border with Changhua county.

-Blue Line (Tunghai University-Dongping): Projected to be Taichung Metro’s second completed route, this 15-kilometer line will run diagonally across the city. The line will start in Taiping city, continues to the Taichung Rail Station, and head northeast in a straight line, following ZhongZheng and TaichungGang (Taichung Port) roads before ending at Tunghai University.

-Red Line (Fongyuan-Wuri): This 21.2-kilometer line will start in northern Taichung city’s Tantzu Export Processing Zone and follow Beitun and ShuangShih roads south across the city to Wufeng district.

At least four other lines (brown, purple, orange and yellow) have also been planned or proposed for future expansion of the Taichung Metro.

Taichung MRT entire route will be an elevated construction totaling 16.71 km in length with 18 stations (shown in the planned route diagram) and is scheduled to be completed in October 2015

If you stay here, getting up for an early morning walk will give you lots of chances to spot some of Taiwan’s rare indigenous birds. For the more adventurous there’s the Baxian Mountain Trail which follows the paths used by loggers long time ago. This difficult trail climbs over 1400m, takes 7-8 hours to complete and is only good for the very fit one.

Xinshe Sea of Flowers event is taking place for the sixth time as the Republic of China (Taiwan) celebrates its centennial this year.

The Xinshe Sea of Flowers event is the largest and best-known recreational agriculture event of its kind in Taiwan and each year it attracts over a million visitors, drawn to a seemingly endless panorama of colorful flowers, which also helps boost the local businesses and the overall economy. Its steady growth has made Xinshe a successful role model when it comes to reviving local agricultural and business industries.

Each year, organizers of the Xinshe Sea of Flowers event put in a lot of thought into the presentation of this gorgeous event. Specially-themed exhibitions are designed according to the rural district’s unique attributes. Stands selling local agricultural specialties, local cuisine and many other interesting items are also set up against the natural backdrop of flower fields. In addition, entertaining performances will take place at the site, and creative in-depth tours that include visits to recreational farms and stays at local scenic guesthouses will also be available.

With all this, this late-autumn festival is a highly anticipated public event that heralds the imminent arrival of winter.

The Yamay Resort is an amusement park “Discovery”, and a water park “Mala” just side by side. You’ll find alot of fun rides like Ferris wheel, rafting etc., though the highlight roller coaster has to be “Gravity Max.” On this ride you begin high up on a horizontal track that tilts forward to a 90 degree angle before releasing you down and into a loop the loop. There are also plenty of rides for kids and non thrill seekers.

The water park, Mala, can get very busy during the summer months, especially in the holidays, but it’s still a great place to cool off. The 2.4m, machine generated wave is a lot fun as too is Cowabunga, an artificial wave that can be surfed. It’s not much like the real thing, but watching people wipe out is entertaining enough! Two theme parks in one!

Two Taiwanese girls, Jinyu 25, in Taipei, and Karren, 28, in Taichung, have come up with the most unusual form of art — lying face down on the streets while having their photographs taken.

This pair of Taiwanese women who call themselves the “Pujie Girls” seem to be “planking” All-Stars on the Internet. Their name translates to “falling on the street” in Mandarin, the name is also a pun on the Cantonese curse “Puk Gai” which means “may you drop dead”.

This strange art is also called ‘planking’, ‘facedowns’ or ‘the ‘lying down game’.

Karren, 28, who is a full-time photographer, and Jinyu, 25, a university student studying English, have also recently appeared on various television talk shows to demonstrate how planking is done accurately and safely.

By posting their planking photographs taken at various tourist spots in Taipei, the two women are aiming to promote Taiwan’s tourism not just to China, but to the world!
